Les français veulent prendre leur retraite au soleil

Half of all those approaching retirement in France plan to relocate to another region when they retire. We find out which areas are top of their list.

The French look forward to retirement in the sun

• According to a survey conducted by TNS Sofres*, 50% of retirees plan to spend their retirement in a region other than the one they currently live in.

The most favoured regions are the South of France, the Midi and the Côte d’Azur (27% of respondents), followed by Aquitaine, South Western France and the Charentes (20%) and Brittany and Normandy (also 20%).

• The main criteria driving the choice of retirement location are: climate (49%), proximity to family (47%), beautiful countryside (43%) and healthcare facilities (30%).

• 95% of French people aged over 50 plan to stay in mainland France for their retirement. Nearly 800,000 seniors (that’s 4% of over-50s) would consider moving abroad when they retire. Their favoured destinations are: Spain and Morocco (both with 25% of respondents), followed by Italy, Tunisia, Canada, Israel and Portugal.
